Teaching Children About God's Love: A Parent's Practical Guide
One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is a deep, unshakeable understanding of God’s love for them. But how do you introduce these big truths to little hearts and minds?
As a former teacher and the author of You Are So Loved, I’ve spent years thinking about this question. Here is what I’ve learned about teaching children about God in a way that genuinely sticks.
Start with the Simplest Truth
Children understand love before they understand theology. Begin here: “God loves you.” Say it often. Say it in the morning, at mealtimes, and at bedtime. Let it become the foundation on which everything else is built.
The Bible puts it beautifully: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1)
Use Stories to Make Faith Tangible
Abstract ideas become real through stories. A Christian children’s book is not just entertainment — it is a doorway into spiritual conversation. When you read together, you create space for questions:
- “Why did God make me?”
- “Does God really know my name?”
- “Is God with me when I’m scared?”
These conversations, sparked by a good faith-based children’s book, plant seeds that can grow for a lifetime.
Build Rhythms of Faith
Simple daily practices create a framework that children can hold onto:
Morning: A short prayer of thanks for the new day.
Mealtimes: Gratitude expressed together before eating.
Bedtime: A faith-based picture book, followed by prayer.
These habits do not require long sermons. What they require is consistency and presence.
Teach Through Creation
Step outside. Point to the sky, the trees, the small details of the world around you. Talk about how God made all of it — and how God made your child, specifically and intentionally. Creation is God’s most accessible classroom for young children.
Welcome Their Questions
Do not shy away from hard questions: “Why did grandma die?” “If God is good, why does bad stuff happen?” Children who learn that faith can hold difficult questions tend to grow into adults with more resilient, personal faith.
You do not need to have every answer. “I don’t know, but I know God loves us and is right here with us” is one of the most honest things a parent can say.
The Role of Christian Children’s Books
A well-crafted Christian children’s book does something remarkable — it puts profound truth into language a child can hold in their heart. Picture books about God’s love, belonging, and identity give children vocabulary for their faith before they even realize they are learning.
You Are So Loved was written for this purpose — to give parents and grandparents a beautiful, simple way to say to a child: you were made on purpose, and you are deeply, completely loved by God.
Reading it together is one small act that can shape a child’s whole understanding of who they are and Whose they are.
